(Webinar) 2024 Storm Season Recap: A Communications Debrief From the Control Center

August 22, 2025

The 2025 storm season is already ramping up, bringing outages and severe weather events with it. While power reliability is critical during this time, keeping your customers safe and well-informed is just as essential.

In 2024, the southeastern United States faced an especially intense storm season, beginning in late June with Hurricane Beryl and followed by Hurricanes Francine, Debby, Helene, and Milton, all making landfall just days apart in September and October. As hurricanes, wildfires, and other climate-driven disasters grow in frequency and intensity, utilities must evolve their crisis communication strategies to ensure community safety and awareness.

Highlights From the 2024 Storm Season

The 2024 storm season was record-breaking, with 24 storms causing over a billion dollars in damages, surpassing the previous record set in 2022 by 60%. Last year, KUBRA’s industry-leading outage map, Storm Center™, received 171 million map views across all its utility partners’ platforms—an increase of 75% over 2023. Between September and October, KUBRA’s utility partners sent out 14 to 17 million messages per week to keep customers informed and safe, nearly triple the average weekly volume.

These statistics highlight the sheer scale of last year’s storm activity and the pressure it places on a utility’s outage communication systems and customer outreach programs. As storms continue to increase in frequency and intensity, utilities must adopt best practices and state-of-the-art technology to meet the rising demands of customer communication and public safety.
